Tell me if this sounds familiar…

You finally got the harp.
You’ve watched a mountain of YouTube videos.
You have notebooks, PDFs, maybe even a course or two.

But when you sit down to play, your brain does this:

  • “Where do I even start today?”

  • “Why do my hands feel so clumsy?”

  • “Real harpists just…play. Why can’t I?”

You want to:

  • Play the songs you love

  • Use chords without overthinking

  • Maybe even sing or improvise a little

…but instead you find yourself:

  • Re‑watching the same tutorial again

  • Feeling guilty that you “should” be farther along

  • Worrying you’re too old, too rusty, or not “musical enough” for real lessons

And underneath all of that?

You’re scared of being seen trying.
Of getting it “wrong” in front of a teacher.
Of confirming the story that you’re “not really a musician.”

“Very friendly, relaxed, down‑to‑earth, and incredibly helpful for a complete beginner—even with selecting a harp.”
— Ebony

If you’re nodding along, you’re exactly who I created these lessons for.

Now, do a little though experiment with me…

Take a breath and imagine:

  • You sit down at your harp, and instead of freezing, you know exactly what to do for the next 10–20 minutes (or more!).

  • Your fingers remember simple, beautiful chord patterns that actually sound like music.

  • You can loop those patterns, add a little melody, maybe even hum or sing along—without your inner critic hijacking the moment.

  • When you make a mistake, you don’t spiral. You smile, breathe, adjust your hands (because now you know how), and keep going.

  • You feel safe enough to try things, to be playful, to be a beginner and an artist at the same time.

Over time, you notice:

  • Your hands feel more relaxed and confident

  • Chords don’t look like mysterious math anymore

  • You can share a piece with a friend, your church, or your Ren faire crew—and actually enjoy it

  • Your harp time becomes your favorite form of slow living, self‑care, and creative expression

This is what we build together in private lessons.

  • Live 1:1 lessons on Zoom (or in‑person if you’re local).

2. Science‑Backed, Body‑Friendly Technique

  • We focus on healthy alignment, relaxed hands, and efficient movement so playing feels good in your body.

  • I’ll explain the “why” behind technique using simple, nerd‑friendly science—not to overwhelm you, but to give your brain something reassuring to hold onto.

  • We’ll use simple “spellbook” patterns and expand them into intros, accompaniments, and arrangements.

  • We design realistic practice plans that work with your real life—kids, work, brain fog, the whole thing.

  • You’ll learn how to structure a 5‑, 10‑, or 20‑minute session so it actually moves you forward.

Who This Is and Isn’t For

This is for you if…

  • You’re an adult hobbyist harpist (or harp‑curious) who wants more than random tutorials.

  • You already have access to a (lever) harp, or are ready to rent/purchase one.

  • You’re tired of feeling stuck, behind, or “not good enough yet” and you’re ready for kind, personalized guidance.

  • You care as much about joy, creativity, and process as you do about playing “perfectly.”

  • You like a little nerdy/whimsical energy—spellbooks, Ren faires, and cozy practice vibes are your jam.

This is not for you if…

  • You want a strict, conservatory‑style teacher who will bark orders and drill you relentlessly.

  • You’re looking for a miracle without putting in any work at all.

  • You want to race through grades or competitions as fast as possible, no matter how it feels.

  • You’re offended by the idea that 5 minutes of mindful, intentional practice can be a win.

Who am I, anyway?

Hi, I’m Kathryn—singer, harpist, pianist, and your resident whimsical “nutty” professor.

I’ve spent almost 20 years in the music world, and I’ve seen how much damage a careless teacher can do with a single sentence. My own piano teacher once told me I’d “never be any good at piano”—and yet here I am, a singer, harpist, and pianist, helping other adults reclaim their musical voice.

I teach with three non‑negotiables:

  1. People over perfection. Your worth is not measured in perfect scales or advanced repertoire.

  2. Process over product. We celebrate the showing up, not just the polished performance.

  3. Science + mindfulness. Good technique and a kind, present mind make everything easier.

I’m here to be the teacher I wish I’d had: the one who sees your potential, protects your joy, and gives you tools that actually work in a real, messy, beautifully human life.

The Logistics…

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Apply for Lessons

    • Click the button and answer a few questions about your harp experience, goals, and comfort level.

    • This helps me make sure we’re a good fit.

  2. I Follow Up Personally

    • I’ll email you with available time slots, the $115/50‑minute rate, and how to get started.

    • If I’m full, I’ll offer a waitlist and some next‑best resources so you’re not left hanging.

  3. We Schedule Your First Lesson

    • You’ll get a Zoom link (or studio details if local), plus a short pre‑lesson check‑in so I know what to focus on right away.

  4. After Each Lesson

    • You’ll leave with 1–3 clear, doable practice steps—no giant, overwhelming to‑do lists.

    • We’ll celebrate your wins, adjust what’s not working, and keep you moving gently forward.

FAQs

“I’ve tried free/cheap lessons before and barely improved. How will this be different?”
Many of my students come to me after feeling burned by random online content. The difference here is structure and personalization. Instead of you trying to stitch together 47 YouTube videos, we’ll create a clear path based on your hands, your harp, and your goals. You’ll always know what to focus on next, and you’ll have a real human in your corner when you get stuck.

“I don’t have much time. Can I really make progress?”
Yes.! We design your practice around your actual life, not your fantasy schedule. I’ll show you how to use 5–15 minutes in a way that counts—simple warm‑ups, focused chord work, micro‑goals that stack up over time. Many of my favorite breakthroughs have happened in seasons when students could only grab a few minutes a day.

“I’m scared I’ll be judged. I’m a late‑bloomer / rusty / anxious player.”
This is a judgment‑free space, truly. I specialize in working with adults who feel tender about their musical past—whether that’s a harsh teacher, a shaming comment, or just years of “I’m not really a musician.” We go at your pace. I will never roll my eyes at your questions (I actually love questions!), or shame you for where you are. Your courage to show up is the most impressive part.

“Kathryn is extremely nice, very helpful, and so encouraging. I actually look forward to more lessons with her.”
— Adult beginner

“Do I need to read music or know theory first?”
Nope! We’ll use a mix of chord patterns, listening, simple visuals, and (if you’re open to it) gradually introduce just enough reading or theory to support your goals. You do not have to become a theory nerd to make beautiful sounds at your harp.

“Do I need my own harp already?”
For ongoing private lessons, yes—you’ll need regular access to a harp so you can practice between sessions. If you’re harp‑curious but don’t have an instrument yet, you can still apply and note that on your form; I can point you toward good beginner options and next steps.

“What if I’m not sure I can afford it?”
Investing in yourself can feel scary, especially if you’ve been burned before. My goal is to make sure that if we work together, you feel the value in every session—not just in your hands, but in your confidence and joy. You’ll see current rates and options on the application follow‑up, and you can decide from there with clear information and zero pressure.
